This historical fiction novel, classified as children's, could appeal to teenagers who like history and reading about greed. Other discussion topics include the interactions of Europeans and Native Americans, religion, and authority. They chief there offers them all the gold in his river that they can dig. The writing, as always in the case of Scott O'Dell, is notable for its simple beauty-again, never become overbearing or overwrought, but it seems to rather allow the characters and atmosphere breathe and take in their surroundings before throwing anything into action. Binding is tight, sturdy and square. This book is narrated by Esteban, a young mapmaker seduced by Mendoza to join a gold-seeking company in hopes of becoming famous by mapping out the New World.

Chapters 5-8 Mendoza and his supporters get still stuck in the sea of Cortez. Nice first editions such as this are quite scarce. Unloose the adjectives for this one: a stunning novel of compelling interest and mounting impact.
