This is not a story of a nice young man made good. It's tricky to make a sociopath like this protagonist a sympathetic character, and while I didn't actually care about Michael Vincent, wasn't rooting for him, didn't hope he'd triumph in the end, I did feel the escalating tension as Michael lied, cheated, screwed, and killed his way from a stint as a small-time Mob enforcer in New York to his dream job as a movie producer in and among the bright lights of L. He is conditioned to violence by his abusive father. This one is an older one. Stone Barrington is a little to smooth and full of himself, but Michael Vincent was a sleeze character with charm. Prolific crime writer Woods is back in form with a propulsive thriller featuring a movie mogul embroiled in multiple murders. You grow to loathe him real quick because he's only in the whole thing for himself.

Reading it this time, I do see some clunky writing here and there but the whole thing is far too engrossing to ding it for that.
